Man Fined Over Pizza Wages

In Melbourne a restaurant owner and 2 companies have been fined more than $300,000 and ordered to make payments to his staff of $79,000 after it was revealed that he had failed to pay them the minimum wage required.

Many of the workers were teenagers as young as 13, and were employed to work at one of two La Prochette restaurants between 2009  and 2012 in Pakenham and Berwick. The workers were underpaid a total of $258,000 and were instead offered a discount on pizza and softdrink to offset the lack of pay. The workers, totaling 111 in number, were employed as cooks, kitchenhands and waiters.

Mr Ruby Chand, the restaurant owner, was fined a total of $55,803. The two companies operating the stores were each fined $139,507.50.
